Sen. Franken on Abusive Debt Collection Practices

The “End Debt Collector Abuse Act” would amend the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to address developing unscrupulous debt collection practices and update provisions to comport with today’s economy, including: prohibiting arrest warrants for debt collection; requiring additional information be provided to verify a debt; requiring a thorough investigation upon dispute of a debt; and increasing statutory damages (currently set at $1,000).

Below is Senator Al Franken’s excellent speech to Congress on the Act, which he introduced. Let’s all hope it passes, at least in some form.
